Iyengar Inspired

The yoga we practice is inspired on the Iyengar method, adapted by Marta Mahou’s direct experience after 30 years of study and practice of Iyengar and other types of yoga.

Iyengar Yoga was developed by BKS Iyengar, one of the 20th century’s most influential yogis. Born in 1918, he lives in Pune, India, where he continues to teach thousands of students coming from all over the world. BKS Iyengar encourages yoga practitioners to experiment each asana (posture) profoundly and thoroughly.

In Iyengar Yoga asanas are held over longer periods of time, especially the standing postures –most of them specific to this type of yoga-. Thus the practitioner can better adjust the proper alignment, a characteristic of this type of hatha yoga.

The proper alignment of bones and joints provides better balance with less wear on the muscles, hence delivering more stability with less effort. The correct alignment improves blood flow, creates more inner space in the joints -literally- and balances the energy flow through the entire body, bringing health and well-being.

The use of props such as wood blocks, belts, special furniture, blankets, etc., is also typical of Iyengar Yoga. These props help people with special needs –injuries or structural body limitations- to practice the postures safely. The props are used for support, allowing the student to breathe freely during the postures.
